Ground floor of the existing building or the entire building can be converted into a hall/s by transferring the load from the load bearing walls/columns to portal frames. The load of the building is calculated and new columns & beams are designed in order to bear the load created by the removal of centrally located load bearing columns. This procedure gives value addition to the building by utilizing the space created; commercially. Buildings having commercial value but are underutilized due to the limitations with regard to the space available can utilize this technology to meet the requirement.
In this cite example as evident from the photographs, the school office building of ‘Vimalagiri’ Public School was transformed into a church so as to demolish the old church building which was situated in the middle of the school ground and thus to create a vast play ground to the students of the school. If this technology wasn’t adopted, the school authorities wouldn’t have been able to properly utilize school ground space.

Problems faced: The playground of the school was occupied by the church; which was constructed prior to the school. The school management was left with no choice but either to demolish the church and construct a new church outside the school compound or to convert the existing double-storied office building of the school into a church and replace the old church with the newly built church, thus enabling the school to have a vast playground
Project Description: The six load-bearing columns of the office building positioned inside the building were demolished and the load was transferred laterally in order to create the church hall. The needed architectural and structural changes were made to transform the office building into a church, thus enabling the students of the school to utilize the entire playground.
